The Cheesy Pop Archives

In recent months we’ve been collating a pretty self explanatory Spotify playlist called Every Song I’ve Ever Loved – it is full of around 400 songs that are equally shit and amazing.  On browsing through ‘related artists’ on Spotify I’ve uncovered some long-forgotten gems from pop groups some people probably haven’t even heard of (and for good reason).  Below are some examples – depending on your musical tastes this list is either a collection of ultimate pop turds, or classic cheesy “choooonz”.

allSTARS

This was a cheesy British pop group made up of 3 girls and 2 boys, who were around in 2001/2 and had a shit TV show on CITV called STARStreet.  The group members included Darren from Hollyoaks (look at how young he looks!) and Balls of Steel/Star Stories regular Thaila Zucchi.

ABC Upfronts 2011: Once Upon a Time

Next up is fantasy drama Once Upon a Time.  This stars Jennifer Morrison (How I Met Your Mother) as a woman with a troubled past who is drawn into a strange town called Storybrooke after a boy shows up claiming to be her son.  The show features a host of fairytale characters such as Snow White (played by Ginnifer Goodwin), Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), and Pinocchio (Jakob Davies), and also stars Scottish actor Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, The Full Monty).

ABC Upfronts 2011: Charlies Angels

Another new ABC show for 2011/12 is Charlie’s Angels – a modern reboot of the classic girly action series.  The show stars Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights, The Roommate), Rachael Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy, Headland) and  Annie Ilonseh (Melrose Place) as the new Angels with Robert Wagner playing the voice of Charlie.  Drew Barrymore, star of the 2000 film version is also on board as a producer of the new series.

ABC Upfronts 2011: Pan Am

We posted some trailers for Fox pilots yesterday and today it’s the turn of ABC.  First up we have Pan Am, a sexy soap starring Christina Ricci (The Addams Family, Black Snake Moan) set in the 1960’s in the glamorous world of air travel focussing on the lives of the flight attendants and pilots.  Also stars Kelli Garner (Going The Distance, My Generation), British actress Annabelle Wallis (The Tudors), and Michael Mosley (Scrubs).

Fox Upfronts 2011: Napoleon Dynamite

Next up, a Beavis and Butthead esque animated series based on the brilliant film Napoleon Dynamite.  Featuring voices of the original cast (John Heder, Aaron Ruell, Tina Majorino, Sandy Martin) as well as guest characters voiced by actors like Jennifer Coolidge (Stiflers mom from American Pie), Sam Rockwell (Moon) and Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords).  The series will follow the continued adventures of Napoleon (who still lives with his Grandma and brother) and his friends Pedro and Deb.

Fox Upfronts 2011: Alcatraz

Next up….from the man who brought you Lost, starring…..him from Lost….it’s Alcatraz.

Yep this is JJ Abram’s new crime drama starring Jorge Garcia (aka Hurley from Lost).  In 1960’s prisoners in Alcatraz have mysteriously disappeared and are popping up in the present day.  Jorge plays Alcatraz expert and comic book nerd Dr Diego “Doc” Soto who is recruited by Det. Rebecca Madsen (played by Sarah Jones) to help solve a mystery involving an Alcatraz inmate who apparantly died decades ago.

Fox Upfronts 2011: The New Girl

Next up in our pick of the Fox Upfronts is The New Girl.  Starring everyones favourite ‘kooky love interest’ Zooey Deschanel.  The show was originally supposed to be called “Chicks and Dicks” which would have been soooo much better, but never mind….”The New Girl” it is.

Zooey stars as Jessica Day, a quirky teacher (didn’t see that coming) who moves in with 3 guys after being dumped by her boyfriend.  Her 3 new roommates are played by Jake M. Johnson (No Strings Attached, Get Him To The Greek), Max Greenfield (Ugly Betty, Veronica Mars) and Damon Wayans Jr (My Wife and Kids).  The premise might sound pretty same old same old, but there are some genuinely funny moments in the trailer and Deschanel is just so damn endearing that within about 30 seconds I was already hooked.
